The Buffalo Bills Training Camp continues to intensify with the quality of players increasing each day.
The fight between Stefon Diggs and defensive end Greg Rousseau was a spirited tussle that led to both benches emptying and a few punches thrown but was quickly brought under control by the Bills coaching staff. It’s showing a team coming together to defend each other’s manhood on the field of play.
Bills defensive tackle Jordan Phillips said when asked about the fight, “I did not know he (Greg Rousseau) had it in him” in reference to his response to the tough physical play after the whistle. This is an aspect of training camp when you toughen some guys up in order to see what they are made of.
Since the pads went on, the guys are starting to show their physicality like cornerback Siran Neal ‘s bone jarring hit on running back Devin Singletary. Bills rookie running back James Cook has some slick smooth moves but seems to run very high leaving his shoulders and chest areas exposed for possible contact by defenders. Cook is definitely in the plans of first year Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. I’m also impressed by rookie undrafted free agent running back Raheem Blackshear’s explosive first step and hitting the hole with authority along with keeping low to the ground. Blackshear is one of my diamonds in the rough players who could make the Buffalo Bills final roster or practice squad. I will predict right now Raheem Blackshear will be playing in the NFL for somebody.
The offensive line is turning into a free for all for the back up positions with several candidates including last year’s second round draft pick Cody Ford.
My starting five consists of Center Mitch Morse, left tackle Dion Dawkins, left guard, Ryan Bates, right tackle Spencer Brown, and right guard Rodger Saffold. Hopefully Saffold will have a speedy recovery from a rib injury after being involved in a car accident.
There are 18 offensive linemen in camp. Hopefully some of these guys will standout in the upcoming preseason games. Keep in mind former starters Ike Boettger is recovering from a ruptured Achilles suffered late last season.
We will keep an eye on offensive linemen like Greg Van Roten (perfect football or WWE name), to veterans Greg Mancz and Bobby Hart along with the best of the rest. It’s time for Cody Ford to step up and win one of those back up positions.
Western New York and all surrounding areas have the best football fans in the NFL. Buffalo Bills had 35,911 fans on a sultry summer night when the beach might have been a better place to be. Von Miller said it reminds him of a college town where everybody supports the team. I think Miller might be right on one thing everyone loves and supports the Buffalo Bills! Hopefully City of Buffalo, politicians, and community leaders can someday soon start agreeing on how to solve the many serious issues effecting City of Buffalo residents.
