-The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act-
Earlier this year, Majority Leader Peoples-Stokes sponsored the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA), the most progressive and comprehensive legalized cannabis legislation in the country.
“As a result, MRTA will bring restorative justice and economic support to communities of color that have been harmed most by the War on Drugs throughout the State of New York,” stated the Assemblywoman.
In addition to social justice and equity, which were the legislation’s primary focus, MRTA has also legalized recreational adult-use of the cannabis plant in NYS, widely known as weed.
“What many members of the community may be unaware is that under MRTA, marijuana arrests and convictions legalized under the law will be expunged,” she continued. “Marijuana expungement means thousands of New York State residents will have the opportunity to move forward with their lives with a clean slate. The free marijuana expungement clinics hosted by my office will hopefully educate, positively impact, and right the wrongs of the past for many members of the community
