Bill Passed! Cariol Horne To Be Granted Retroactive Retirement

Assembly Majority Leader Peoples-Stokes and Senator Kennedy Passes Bill that Grants a Retroactive Retirement Date from State and Local Retirement Systems for Cariol Horne

On the final day of the New York State legislative session, lawmakers New York State Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes and New York State Senator Tim Kennedy co-sponsored a bill that passed both houses which grants a retroactive retirement date of August 5, 2010, from the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System for Cariol Horne, which is rightfully deserved.

Horne, a former Buffalo Police officer, says was fired from the department and subsequently lost her pension after intervening when a fellow officer attempted to choke a suspect.

This year, Horne won a case in the New York State Supreme Court that vacated a previous ruling upholding Horne’s firing. This bill rectifies the situation by providing that within one year from the effective date of this act, Cariol Horne may file with the New York State and Local Police Retirement System an application for service retirement benefits with an effective date of retirement of August 5, 2010.
