The Campaign to Elect Myles Carter to the Office of Erie County Sheriff held a press conference in recently  expressing outrage over the death of Mikey Frear, – another life lost at the Erie County Holding Center. On March 13, 2021 Frears was found unresponsive in his cell and could not be revived.

“Every 6 months someone is dying in this building,” Carter said.

Justice and equality are two focal points on which Carter is basing his campaign for sheriff. He   and the family of  Frears released the following statement:

“We demand Andrew Cuomo take immediate action to remove Sheriff Timothy Howard from the office of Erie County Sheriff. The sheriff’s department, under the administration of Sheriff Howard, lacks the security, transparency and accountability necessary to build and sustain a trustworthy relationship with the community.”

Sherriff Howard was re-elected in 2009, 2013, and, by a slender margin, in November 2017. At least 31 inmates have died in  Sheriff Tim Howard’s jails since he took office in 2005.  He is not running this year.
