“Symptoms are not enemies to be destroyed, but sacred messengers who encourage us to take better care of ourselves” – Jon Gabriel
by Kathleen Richardson
When we experience illness, aches, or pains, our first instinct is to find a way to get rid of it. We grab the Tylenol, Motrin, or whatever else we can to relieve our pain and discomfort as soon as possible.
As a Holistic Practitioner, I understand the connection and continuity between the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. Disease or imbalance in one area of our lives will manifest as disease and imbalance in other areas of our lives. It is not uncommon for the disease we experience in our spirit and emotions to manifest as physical dis-ease. Louise Hay, author of the Book, Heal Your Body explains, “The mental thought patterns that cause the most disease in the body are criticism, anger, resentment, and guilt.”
When we do not or even feel we cannot address certain issues in our lives, our bodies will speak for us. The body will speak the mind. The body will speak as headaches, body aches, toothaches, neck pain, back pain or any other physical ailment or illness. The pain or discomfort manifests to get our attention. It’s as if the body is telling you, “Hey. You have been ignoring us. There are some things going on that need to be addressed and this is the only way to get your attention.”
Many of us do not stop, rest, or go within until there is a health crisis. Then and only then do we take a moment to see what is going on. Karol Truman has said, “the symptoms in our body are carriers of information, of a message about the state of our soul.”
When we stop to see what the body is saying we may come to the realization that not only do we need to make changes to our diet and exercise, but we also need to address the issues that cause us emotional and mental discomfort. Health is more than what we eat, it is also about what eats us. This can be a very painful experience as many of us carry heavy burdens from our past and even the transgenerational trauma of our family.
Western modern medicine will treat an illness or disease purely from a physical perspective and treat the symptom. African Holistic Health will treat an illness or disease from a physical, mental, and spiritual perspective, looking at all angles to address the root issue. The next time an ache, pain, dis-ease, or illness manifests in your life, stop to see what the mind or spirit is saying through the body. Because the body speaks the mind.
