Presenting The 2020 AKA Debutants EMERALDS OF EXCELLENCE!

The Culminating Extravaganza, introducing the 2020 Emeralds Of Excellence will be presented   on November 28, 2020 at 6:00 pm via social media outlets.

The Gamma Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is honored to present the 39th biennial Culminating Extravaganza; Emeralds of Excellence Leadership Development Program.  What has traditionally been delivered as a formal debutante pageant and ball, has evolved due to Covid-19 restrictions to a complete virtual program.

The Leadership Development Program is designed to enhance the development of the young ladies through leadership workshops, cultural and community service activities, college preparedness, social etiquette, and character-building activities that help prepare them for life. This year these activities creatively delivered virtually.  Additionally, the program encourages and cultivates high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among high school youth.

The Debutante Ball is an avenue used to introduce deserving and outstanding young ladies  to the Western New York community in a formal setting. A Debutante is a young lady who has been prepared in the social graces, trained to dance formally, and who is community service oriented. She is then presented to her community in a formal presentation, which is her first public appearance into society.

The 2020 Gamma Phi Omega Chapter, Emeralds of Excellence are as follows: Timesha Austin, Theresa Banks, Kamya Cox, Kierra Cox, Camryn Davis, Kendell Jelks, Na’Kya McCann, Sydney Robinson and Angela Samuel.

One of the highlights of the evening will include the Father/Daughter dance, choreographed by Ms. Barbara Glover of Ms. Barbara’s School of Dance.

The 9 “Emeralds” were presented via zoom, on October 16, 2020, in a traditional African ceremony called Rites of Passage.  This special element of the leadership program included parents and elders who actively participated in the traditional presentation to the “village”.

The Gamma Phi Omega Chapter, in Buffalo New York, includes a membership of 115 college-educated women, each distinguished for acts of service and individual contributions. Mrs. Crystal Benton served as the Administrative lead for the Executive Committee; including Mrs. Gina Mayo-Hawk, Miss Tracey Garner, Mrs. Pam Stephens-Jackson, Ms. Gellenia Smallwood, Ms. Cydney Johnson, and Ms. Lorie Perrin for the 2020 Emeralds of Excellence Program. Mrs. Ottilie M. Woodruff is the chapter’s current President and Mrs. Teena M. Jones is the chapter’s current Vice-President.
