2020 has been an interesting year to say the least. Besides a Global Pandemic, we’re dealing with extreme racism and criminality at the highest levels of our government. People are speaking with emotion and passion. The people want justice. During these tough times, we end up searching for guidance through all this madness. We end up asking ourselves “Where do we go from here?”
On Monday, November 7th we will get a brilliant answer to that question. WNY Peace Center is holding its 53rd annual event: An evening with Dr. Cornel West. “None of us alone can save the nation or world. But each of us can make a positive difference if we commit ourselves to do so.” Words from the great Cornel West.
The current plan is to host this talk projected at North Park Theatre, 1438 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, NY. There is an option to view this presentation through your own Zoom meeting with family or close friends (one ticket per computer) OR with the wider Peace community at the theater (one ticket per person) with masks and physical distancing measures, of course, as recommended by health officials at the time. There will also be a live Q&A session after the lecture. You can buy tickets at WNYPeace.org.
D. Cornel West is an author, activist, philosopher, and professor. He is a Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. Brother West has written and edited many books. He is best known for his memoir, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud, as well as classics such as Race Matters and Democracy Matters. Dr. West has even produced a spoken word album working with a variety of different artists such as Jill Scott, Andre 3000, and Talib Kweli to name a few.
Cornel West has a passion to communicate to a variety of publics to keep alive the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. – a legacy of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice. He believes in building a movement of all people. Dr. West wants to bring to light social injustices that we face, in order to bring us closer together.
This event is hosted by the Western New York Peace Center (WNY Peace Center), whose mission is Peace through Justice at home and abroad. The organization is dedicated to enriching the quality of life of our local and global communities through the prevention of violence to people and the planet. Peaceful conflict resolution among people and within institutions, especially for youth, is central to our mission. So is upholding human rights and challenging oppression, power imbalances, and systemic issues that hurt the quality of life for all.
WNY Peace Center continues to strive for economic and educational justice and respect for people of all cultures. Through the help of the executive director Victoria Ross and Office Manager/Coordinator Deidra EmEl, our community can benefit from this event. On November 9th, we may very well need the guidance and inspiration of Brother West.
In these current times is it great to have a voice to help us through the turmoil. It is important that we listen to those who have experience and those who understand how to bring us together. Dr. West has both of those skills and everyone in Buffalo now has the opportunity to now hear his words and message. There will also be a basket raffle, silent auction, and virtual marketplace. Please join us for this special evening!
ED. NOTE: Congratulations to the WNY Peace Center for being named Buffalo Spree’s The People’s Choice for the Best Activist Group in 2020. Go to wnypeace.org for a message from Dr. West and more informatio about the upcoming event.
