When three talented female realtors – Jamia “Mia” Mootry, Tamika Murphy and Rosalind Burgin – decided to come together and form their own women and minority-owned real estate company – The MMB Realty Group – they did so with one thing in mind: successfully meeting the needs of their clients.
Well aware of the housing disparity gap in Black home ownership locally and nationally, to them real estate is not just as another business transaction.
A recent article shared the encouraging news that millennials are embracing home ownership in record numbers. However MMB Realty believes that this increase can and should include African Americans and females as well.
According to Antoine Thompson, Executive director of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB),Metro Buffalo Home ownership stands at 73.5% White and 32.7% Black (Prosperity Now). In 2019, locally some 19,792 mortgages went to Whites and only 900 mortgages went to African Americans (Compliance Tech).
In helping to bridge the gap, “we focus on educating clients in the home-buying procedure,” said Ms. Burgin, “especially first time home buyers.”
As a team, she continued, the agency provides buyers with knowledge and information to navigate the process and help them get credit, thus reducing the fears of acquiring a mortgage.
“Our belief is that there is no reason why a person working every day, cannot own a home…. we find there are a lot of our people who are working and paying exorbitant amounts of rent to live in substandard housing. And in WNY you can be a homeowner for what you’re paying for rent in most cases!”
“As realtors we have observed how purchasing a home not only elevates personal outlooks but serves as a foundation for individual and generational wealth,” added Tamika.
“And as African Americans and women we understand the dreams and obstacles that minorities and women experience in becoming a homeowner or investing in real estate,” commented Jamia, “but we also know how many achieve happiness and success.”
Research has indeed shown that homeownership is a proven way most families build wealth in this country. “…We have seen how a new home has changed lives. What an empowering life event that can inspire future generations,” stated Ms. Mootry.
Added Ms. Murphy,“We have all seen the happy faces of young children as they enter their new homes with their parents. It’s life changing!”
MMB Agency also focuses on assisting seniors with their real estate needs including downsizing to the perfect home or finding that perfect starter home that they may wish to gift to a family member.
Whether its buying or selling, Jamia, Tamika, and Rosalind are committed to providing each client a customized and quality real estate experience. “We are one team. One vision. One mission. One goal,” they said in a joint statement. “Serving One YOU!”
