Rev. James R. Cherry Sr. is being remembered as a dynamic spiritual and community in the wake of his passing July 30. The Aenon Missionary Baptist Church announced the passing of its retired pastor on its Facebook page. It noted Rev. Cherry recently suffered a stroke. He died at his home in Gainesville, Virginia, located in Prince William County a week before his 86th birthday.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. Cherry,” a statement from Mayor Lovely Warren said. “His steadfast service to God, the Aenon family and our community will live on through his children, loved ones and congregation.”
Aenon and the current pastor, the Rev. Jonathan McReynolds, announced the news on the church’s Facebook page Thursday as well as in a Wednesday night post by Rev. Cherry’s son, the Rev. James Cherry Jr., who pastors Antioch Baptist Church.
At press time, information about services and burial were still pending.
