Part 2 of 2 Part Series
In Part 1 of the Water is Life series, we discussed how important water was for both our physical and mental health. We learned what happens to the body when it is deprived of its most important nutrient; water. In this article we will discuss how much water each of us should drink daily, how one should drink water and what type of water is best
How much Water should I drink daily?
Take your body weight, divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you should drink daily. For example, someone who is 200lbs should drink a minimum of 100 ounces of water daily. That equals about 6, 16.9oz bottles of water. If you are exercising, you will need to consume more water. It is very important that you follow these guidelines to prevent dehydration and maximize the benefits of water.
How Should You Drink Water?
Always drink water upon waking up as the body has not had water all night. Drink water before your meals to help with digestion and before exercising to help with oxygen flow. Other than that, drink water however it suits you throughout the day to reach your daily consumption goal. By the time you feel thirsty, or have a dry mouth you are already dehydrated, so it is important to drink throughout the day. One important thing to note is that the body does not store water the same way it stores fat. There is not a reserve of water in the body. That is why it is important to drink water consistently throughout the day, every day. The chart at the end of this column is a great tool to use to determine if you have had enough water.
Your body has no need for milk, juice, soda/pop, or any other beverage that is marketed to you as a substitute for water. These beverages should be eliminated from the diet as much as possible. Water should ALWAYS be your beverage of choice. No other beverage will produce the healing benefits of water, and every time you drink something other than water, you are one step closer to becoming dehydrated. This is especially important for our children. They are at risk of dehydration just as adults are. Their drink of choice should be water as well.
Spring Water, Distilled, or Alkaline?
There are some people who promote drinking spring water rather than distilled water and some who promote drinking only alkaline water. I drink all three and I don’t have a preference. I try not to get caught up in debates like this. But I do have one suggestion, do not drink tap water!
Water is our most precious resource and we must always be concerned and vigilant about the substances in our water. There are many harmful chemicals in our tap water, but I would like to highlight one; sodium fluoride. We’ve been told that water fluoridation is safe, natural and prevents tooth decay. But this is false. Fluoride is not a nutrient. Dr. Bernard Jensen, author or Empty Harvest explains the following:
Excessive doses can be very toxic, and by excessive we are speaking of minute doses to start with. Toxic levels have been shown at merely one part per million (ppm)…you can fill a library with the literature from around the world about the negative effects of sodium fluoride. It has been cited as one of the most potentially toxic factors to the thyroid and endocrine system…Although it was once legal, fluoridation is now banned throughout most of Europe and Japan.
The evidence stating that fluoride reduces tooth decay is weak. Fluoride is a neurotoxin. It impairs cognitive and memory function (causes brain drain). It calcifies the pineal gland and prevents the secretion of melanin. There have been 37 human studies linking fluoride exposure to reduced intelligence. Fluoride bio-accumulates in the body and can also cause arthritis-like symptoms.
Can fluoride be removed from tap water?
I remember my grandmother boiling tap water as a child. This does not remove fluoride. Activated carbon filters like Brita and Pur do not remove fluoride either. Only water filters that use reverse osmosis and deionized and active alumna can remove fluoride. A water distillation system will remove most if not all the fluoride from water as well. It seems somewhat counterintuitive to not drink tap water, but if you’re still not convinced, I have one more thing to add; Flint, Michigan.
Always keep in mind that water is life. It is the most needed nutrient by the body and the body suffers immensely when dehydrated. Drink half your body weight in ounces daily. Drink spring distilled or alkaline water and avoid tap water when possible. Optimal health begins with water, health cannot exist without adequate water consumption.
