From Barbara Seals Nevergold
I am pleased to endorse Terrance Heard for the Buffalo School Board Member At-Large position”, said Barbara Seals-Nevergold, Buffalo School Board President. “I have known Terrance for many years and always admired his dedication to public service. Based on his time as an educator in Buffalo Public Schools, as well as being a community advocate, Terrance understands the sociological and psychological challenges facing our students, families, and teachers. I truly believe he has the vision needed to improve our schools and will be a promising addition to the School Board”. Heard has also received endorsements from the Buffalo Teachers Federation and the Citizen’s Action of WNY organization.
Terrance Heard believes in our students. Heard believes that he can “change the culture” by raising the education bar in our underperforming and underfunded Tier II schools while also addressing the needs of our Tier I criterion schools. Heard stresses the need for open two-way communication with all stakeholders, including students, teachers, parents, and the community. While door knocking and on his listening tour, he heard our parent’s concerns, and some things are clear: “we need to provide our students with a competitive education, safe classrooms, after school programs, in-school suspensions, mentoring and counseling programs”. Addressing all of these concerns would ensure better test scores and a higher graduation rate.
Experience counts! Being the only Member At-Large candidate who was a Buffalo Public Schools educator, Heard knows the sociological and psychological barriers that our students and teachers face in the classrooms. Heard also understands the fiscal responsibility to our districts. As a Court Liaison who heard over 40,000 felony cases, as a Correctional Officer, and a Child Care Counselor, Heard knows our children’s future if we don’t elect a strong, vocal, working leader who cares about their education.
Heard’s goals reflect the goals of students, parents, and teachers he has meet while collecting signatures – to bring pride to Buffalo Public Schools. “Whether you know me as Coach Heard from when I coached your child in football or basketball, or Mr. Heard from the classrooms, or even as T. Heard from the neighborhood, I hope all residents of Buffalo will join me in my pursuit of making sure we have a cultural and climate shift aimed at success for all students, all teachers, all schools, and our community,” said Heard.
Heard has been a passionate student and community advocate and business owner in Buffalo. He has helped write and volunteered for various student mentoring groups including, but not limited to, the Breaking Barriers program and the Wisdom in Troubled Times program. Heard is a deeply dedicated and reliable community leader with a stellar record of successful outreach to a wide variety of demographics from the east side to the west side and from north Buffalo to south Buffalo. He is experienced in strategic planning and providing timely and sound advice on various community initiatives.
