The month of March in the world of sports is a month of Madness. The Madness that brings joy and excitement on one side of the spectrum to some athletes, fans, and sports enthusiasts. On the other hand, it also can bring heartache and disappointment. As we close out the month of March, I would like to represent the Rise Up Right world with the top 5 best and worse moments of March 2019.
5. The Sabres are eliminated from the playoffs for the 8th straight season as they started the season on a 10 game win streak. But since the streak, the Sabres have only won 15 games since December 1st. Questions now loom whether Phil Housley will be terminated and if Jeff Skinner will resign with the Sabres. Hopefully the right moves will be made in the offseason.
4. Speaking of offseason, the Buffalo Bills have been crowned the Kings of Free Agency by multiple sports outlets as the Bills have made a multitude of moves that should better the team. The moves include the acquisitions of John Brown, Cole Beasley, Andre Roberts, Duke Williams, and Tyler Croft at the receiving positions. The Bills strengthened the offensive line by adding Jon Feliciano, LaAdrian Waddle, Spencer Long, Ty Nsekhe, and Matt Morse. They also added future Hall of Famer Frank Gore to the running game. The defense which was very solid last season after Week 2 added Kevin Johnson for more cornerback depth. The Bills are trying to prove that no one circles the wagons like them.
3. One of the biggest splashes in the NBA free agency period happened when Lebron James decided to take his talents to Hollywood as he joined the historic Los Angeles Lakers. Most NBA fans were excited by this move. Ultimately the services of LeBron James was sure to pay dividends for an organization that is looking to become a championship contender again. Only thing is it just didnt happen that way at all this season as the Lakers will end the season with a losing record but LeBron James was deactivated for the last 7 games of the season leaving people to question “is this really your king?” as it pertains to being the best player currently and of all time in the NBA. Has the NBA turned over a new face?
2. The UB Bulls Mens and Womens teams left their mark on the NCAA Basketball world as both teams made to the Big Dance again this year and won their first round matchups. The Lady Bulls would end their season with a loss to UConn who has been the hottest team in the Women’s basketball league for the last 10 years 82-71. The Men’s team would have their run ended by the current Final Four participant in the Texas Tech Red Raiders 78-58. The programs are elevating from season to season which would make someone question……Should UB play in a stronger division where the competition would be better? Keep up the great work UB as your programs continue to build on your dominance.
Finally, the Number 1 spot goes to a coach, mentor, friend, and an inspirational to many people who love coaching basketball or playing the sport as Tawan Slaughter led the Christian Central Academy Lady Crusaders to a Class B Monsignor Martin Championship. Great job Tawan Slaughter and shout out to all the 716ers AAU Semi Pro teams this year.
