(Tuesday, April 9, 2019) — Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that, after conducting a national search, she has selected Rochester Police Department Deputy Chief La’Ron Singletary to be the permanent chief of the Rochester Police Department.
“La’Ron Singletary was born and raised in Rochester and has advanced through the ranks of the Rochester Police Department to distinguish himself among his peers at an international level,” said Mayor Warren. “I have no doubt he will be an outstanding chief of police. As our most recent crime statistics have demonstrated, community engagement saves lives. La’Ron’s expertise in this arena will be critically important as we continue our efforts to strengthen the partnerships between the community and the RPD.”
“I’d like to thank Mayor Lovely Warren for selecting me and having the confidence in me to lead the men and women of the Rochester Police Department as the next Chief of Police,” said Deputy Chief Singletary. “Having been born and raised in the City of Rochester, being a graduate from the Rochester City School District, and having the familiarity with many in the community allows me the opportunity to hit the ground running. I will work hard to serve the men and women of the Rochester Police Department and the citizens of the City of Rochester to ensure we continue to provide a level of service that strengthens relationships, while continuing to focus on crime reduction.”
Deputy Chief Singletary was selected from among more than 20 candidates who responded to a national search for the permanent chief. His appointment will be effective upon confirmation of the Rochester City Council.
He would replace Interim Chief Mark Simmons, who has been in that role since September upon the retirement of former chief Michael Ciminelli. Simmons is expected to return to his former position as Deputy Chief of Administration.
