Locust Street Art is Looking to Hire New Teen Assistants!

Locust Street Art announces a new Workforce Readiness Training Program for 5 young people (age 16-19) interested in careers in the arts, with a special focus on young people from economically disenfranchised neighborhoods in Buffalo.

Selected applicants will receive a year-long, paid training with artists and art educators from LSA and SUNY Buffalo State’s Art Education Program. Prospective applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to the arts and art education to be admitted into the program.

Locust Street Art’s mission is to provide free, accessible and ongoing studio classes for any interested individual, (especially youth, low-income and minority individuals, ages four – senior adult) to develop their talents and gain skills necessary to be able to function as a visual artist in Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Black and White Film Photography, Digital Photography and Hand Drawn Animation.

Job Description:

Each teen assistant will be partnered with one of LSA’s professional teaching artists to learn the skills necessary to start a career in the visual arts. The teen assistant will help in the day to day practices in the class room during regular class times, Tuesday/Thursday after school and Saturday 12:30pm-5:00pm. At least one hour a week the teen assistant will meet with their partnered teaching artists to work on artistic challenges, ie: portfolio, exhibition applications, body of work, college applications, etc…

Job Requirements:

-Must be able to provide NYS working papers

-Have an extreme interest in a career in the visual art field

-Be self-motivated and take direction well

-Good verbal communication skills

-Ability to work with many types of people of all ages (4y/o to adult)

-Maintain a clean, safe, and respectful working environment


-Career development and networking opportunities

-Experience in working with children of different ages and abilities

-Learn creative ways of teaching visual art in a variety of mediums

-Work alongside established faculty in a professional setting

Compensation: $12.00/hour
