-Benny Lester Carter-Bennett Lester Carter was born in 1907, ten years before the first “Jazz” recording was made. Emerging from Harlem’s literary and musical renaissance of the 1920’s as a childhood musical prodigy, he had a career spanning seven decades in which he distinguished himself as an early pacesetter of the music. As a saxophonist, trumpeter, composer and arranger, he worked with most of the superstars of his day and led his own bands in the USA and abroad. One writer described him as follows: “His reputation as one of the original saxophone voices in Jazz is surpassed only by his unblemished reputation as a consummate Bandleader and gentleman.” Maestro Duke Ellington regarded his contributions to the Music as tremendous and extraordinary.” (This previously announced concert has been rescheduled from April 7, 2019)
