The 2018 National Golden Gloves tournament will take place in Omaha, Nebraska from May 14th to May 19th. The Golden Gloves is the most storied amateur boxing tournament in the history of the sport. Names like, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Roy Jones, Jr., and other famous professional fighters have fought in this tournament.
The Golden Gloves tournament was establish in 1927 by the New York Daily News. In 2018, the tradition continues with a new crop of competitors competing for National Golden Gloves titles. The Carubba Collision Buffalo Golden Gloves franchise will represent New York State (except for Metro New York City) in Omaha, Nebraska. Amateur boxers from all around New York State competed in the 2018 Buffalo Golden Gloves tournament, at Buffalo RiverWorks, to earn their spot on the national team.
The competition was fierce and the battles in the ring entertained a legion of boxing fans. The Buffalo Golden Gloves national team consist of 10 weight divisions and representatives. Representing New York State are Jonathan Rodriguez (Albany) at 108lbs, Samir Alowbali (Buffalo) at 114lbs, Joe Reed (Buffalo) at 123lbs, Shamar Lutchman – (Syracuse) at 132lbs, Charles Garner lll (Buffalo) at 141lbs, Jah-Yae Brown (Albany) at 152lbs, Wilmont Wood (Rochester) at 165lbs, Lawrence King Jr. (Rochester) at 178lbs, Riko Hernandez (Rochester) at Heavyweight, Nolan Smith (Niagara Falls) at Super-heavyweight, and Casey Constanzo (Niagara Falls) at 141lbs. female division.
The president of the Buffalo franchise is Don Patterson. Let us congratulate these young men on their accomplishments and wish them well in their quest for gold.
